Gaza Society for Sustainable Agriculture and Friendly Environment (SAFE)

SAFE was founded in 2002 on a conviction that has not changed since: effective intervention does more than meet an immediate need. It protects dignity, builds local capacity and leaves something behind that lasts. The organization's roots are in sustainable agriculture and environmental care. Its early years were spent alongside Gaza's farming and herding communities — strengthening rural livelihoods, improving access to water, and developing the skills of the agricultural workforce. That period built two things SAFE has never lost: a genuine field presence and an engineering discipline in the way it plans and delivers. Each escalation since has widened the mandate. In the recovery periods that followed successive wars, SAFE rehabilitated damaged productive infrastructure, restored the assets families depend on for income, and brought renewable energy to war-affected enterprises, working across all five governorates of the Gaza Strip. How SAFE delivers matters as much as what it delivers. Projects are designed and supervised by the organization's own staff, procured through open competition, and implemented in coordination with line ministries, humanitarian clusters and the communities themselves. A functioning grievance mechanism keeps affected people at the centre of decisions, while independent external audit and UN risk assessment keep the organization answerable to its partners. Two decades on, SAFE remains what it was founded to be — a Gaza organization, rooted in its communities and accountable both to the people it serves and to the partners who fund the work.
